Blown-In vs Batt Insulation: Which Is Better?

A practical comparison of the two most common attic insulation types for BC homeowners.

When upgrading your attic insulation, you have two primary options: blown-in (loose-fill) and batt (rolled) insulation. Both have their place, but for most Vancouver-area attic upgrades, one outperforms the other. Here is a detailed comparison to help you understand why.

WHAT IS BATT INSULATION?

Batt insulation comes in pre-cut rolls or panels, typically made of fiberglass or mineral wool. It is cut to fit between standard-spaced joists (16 or 24 inches on center) and laid in place by hand. Batt insulation has been the standard residential insulation method for decades and is still commonly found in homes built before 2010.

WHAT IS BLOWN-IN INSULATION?

Blown-in insulation is loose-fill material (cellulose or fiberglass) that is installed using a specialized blowing machine. The material is distributed evenly across the attic floor, filling around obstructions and into irregular spaces. It is the preferred method for professional attic insulation contractors.

HEAD-TO-HEAD COMPARISON

COVERAGE

Blown-InFills every gap, crack, and irregular space. No cold spots around obstructions.
BattLeaves gaps around pipes, wires, and irregular joist spacing. Cold spots are common.

R-VALUE PER INCH

Blown-InR-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch (cellulose). R-2.5 to R-3.7 (fiberglass).
BattR-3.0 to R-3.8 per inch (fiberglass). R-3.3 to R-4.2 (mineral wool).

INSTALLATION SPEED

Blown-InA 1,200 sq ft attic can be insulated in 3-5 hours.
BattSame area takes 1-2 full days for proper installation.

AIR SEALING

Blown-InDense-pack blown-in provides some air sealing benefit. Easy to add to air-sealed attics.
BattDoes not seal air leaks at all. Batts must be carefully cut around every penetration.

COST

Blown-In$1.50-$3.00 per sq ft installed to R-50.
Batt$1.00-$2.50 per sq ft installed to R-50 (but quality suffers).

MOISTURE HANDLING

Blown-InCellulose absorbs and releases moisture safely. Works well with proper ventilation.
BattFiberglass does not absorb moisture but can trap it against surfaces, causing mold.

THE VERDICT FOR VANCOUVER HOMES

For attic insulation upgrades in the Vancouver area, blown-in insulation wins on almost every metric that matters. The superior coverage eliminates cold spots, the faster installation reduces labor costs, and the moisture-handling properties of cellulose are well-suited to our wet coastal climate.

Batt insulation still has its place — in walls, floors, and new construction where the framing is exposed and accessible. But for existing attics where you are adding insulation over or around joists, wiring, and plumbing, blown-in is the clear choice.

This is why virtually every professional insulation contractor in BC uses blown-in for attic upgrades. It performs better, installs faster, and costs roughly the same as a properly installed batt job.
